Discovered Dereliction Near Vale, South Dakota

This is a guest post from Kim Taylor of Discovered Dereliction, who was kind enough to share some photos from an adventure in South Dakota.

This solemn beauty is near Vale, South Dakota. I discovered it on one of my numerous back road trips looking to capture the many wonders of the Dakotas.

Vale, South Dakota

This former farm home is sitting all alone, down a dirt road, close to a town with approximately 150 people. I absolutely love this area with all of its tough people and gorgeous landscapes. It’s a photog’s dream in any season. I went for miles and miles seeing no houses, then “bam!” there one would be – just sitting there all by itself and beckoning to me.

I totally believe in the “Take only a picture and leave only a footprint” mentality when seeking these old time treasures. I always take my noble faithful canine companion, Gabby, so she can spot check the areas for hazards. She seems to love photo treasure hunting as much as I do!

  1. My heart breaks every time I see these places. In their day I’m sure they were so beautiful and that’s why I don’t understand why families don’t keep living in them and keep the up keep on them. I come from New Jersey and have seen so many beautiful farm houses and barns that stay with families or others buy and always keep them up. It’s don’t very often you see one run some what.
